What is Carpet Moth & how damaging are they?
Carpet Moths, Case Bearing Moths, or Carpet Beetles are the beasties most commonly associated with damage to wool/wool mix carpets and rugs. Missing fibres in carpets, or threadbare patches where fibres have been eaten away is usually a sign of a carpet moth infestation. Carpet Moth can and will destroy your expensive carpeting and can wipe the value and beauty off of a fine Oriental rug, Regular vacuuming does help, but who wants to or has the time to move all that heavy furniture THAT often? Vacuuming the back of your handmade, authentic Oriental rug takes time and does get missed occasionally…..with just ONE treatment we can save you having to worry about what’s eating your carpet and Rugs for up to 12 months!
Known as textile pests, like the clothes moth this species feeds predominantly on ‘keratin’, a substance found in natural fibres, which often results in damage to carpets or rugs containing wool or silk. Some other fibres carpet moths will feed on include cashmere, feathers and animal hides. Establishing exactly which type of carpet moth infestation you have, whether it be Carpet Moths / Case Bearing Moths or Carpet Beetles is not particularly important, as our treatment process is very much the same, regardless of species.
Carpet Moths favour dark areas, with damage often being more evident underneath or behind furniture that is not often moved for vacuuming. Edges of rooms where foot traffic is minimal is also common place, really anywhere where they can be left alone long enough to go through their eating life cycle at your expense.
Carpet Moths or Case Bearing Clothes Moths are often dark buff in colour. The cases shed during their life cycle can be found near to the now damaged carpet or rug either on the surface or sometimes more discreetly hidden underneath and are described as looking like grains of rice.
